What is MTSS/RtI?

Focused Instruction and Tiered Instruction are both processes of planning, teaching, assessment, and analysis – and they are virtually identical. The common underlying idea is a cycle of problem solving and continuous improvement. In our district’s implementation of Focused Instruction, we have focused primarily on tier 1, which represents the core instruction that all students receive. Focused Instruction helps us identify students whose needs are not being met in core instruction and determine what type of intervention is needed to support them. ILTs (at the school level) and PLCs (at the team level) are the vehicles for engaging in this process of continuous improvement for students in all tiers.
